The following information is being offered to help you
understand what to look for in a telescope.
This is an "under the hood" review that goes beyond the surface of the mirror.
Obviously, optical quality is important, but if you have great optics and the
support mechanism is sub-par, the great mirror you have is not going to
perform as designed.
Let's look "under the hood"

Introduction (to top of page)
The Uti is the most portable Newtonian on the market today! Made from carbon fiber and aircraft aluminum, the Uti6c weighs 11.7 lbs and the new Uti8 weighs 13.7 lbs., INCLUDING THEIR TRIPODS! Both scopes fit in a custom airline overhead bin size case. Both scopes setup in minutes requiring NO TOOLS. All Uti's come equipped with RF Royce Conical primary optics. Whether you're viewing from your backyard, favorite local spot, business or vacation trips the Uti goes anywhere, anytime with ease!
Design and Materials (to top of page)
Reliability, Ruggedness, and Rigidity were the driving design considerations. Aircraft aluminum and carbon fiber were the materials of choice. All aluminum components are laser cut or computer-machined (No mass produced castings are used). Each aluminum component is machined to very tight tolerances providing for a high performance instrument. The main tube, trusses, and secondary tube are constructed from carbon fiber. Carbon fiber provides a very stable platform for the optics with virtually no distortion or sagging in the optical path. Motion of the scope is controlled through the use of Timken tapered roller bearings. The two tapered roller bearings ride on a large 1.00 inch diameter stainless steel shaft, which provides for uncompromising stability.
Setting-up and Traveling with Uti (to top of page)
Traveling with the Uti is simple, fast, and convenient. Whether traveling by car, plane, or hiking, the Uti is easy to take along. The Uti sets-up and tears-down in 3 minutes. No tools are required. The tripod legs have two fixed positions, up for storage or down for viewing. Spring loaded locking pins hold the legs in the two positions. To move from one position to another, simply actuate the release lever and move to the adjacent position. Trusses position the main and secondary tube assemblies. The trusses have captive thumb screws that secure each end of the truss assembly. Three screws fasten the trusses to the main tube and three fasten to the secondary tube.
